22 Things My New Staff Wanted to Know About Me

Recently, I told someone I hate being new. They encouraged me to enjoy my newness and take it all in. You know me. I’m type A, impatient, and love getting stuff done. So, I’m working on slowing down and enjoying the ride. In the mean time, I sent a get-to-know-you questionnaire to my staff (2 GAs and 11 RAs). They told me about their qualities, favorite Starbucks orders, dream jobs, and so on. So I invited them to ask me questions, and I emailed my responses to them. Next steps: Take each of them to Starbucks for a 1:1 conversation about their wants, needs, challenges, insights and goals.

The Q + A

  1. What inspires you? I’m constantly reflecting on my accomplishments and mistakes. I’m a perfectionist. So, I’m always striving to do better and be better. Now that I have a family, I’m most inspired to have a positive impact at home, and to create a safer and positive community wherever I find myself in the world. Also, I’m spiritual and connect up as often as possible. So, God inspires me for sure.
  2. Why did you choose to be an AD? I enjoy working with college students! You all are full of life, and are a force to be reckoned with when you get behind a cause. So much is waiting to be changed in this world, and you are certainly some of the folks at the forefront of movements. I’m also inspired by you when you’re having bad days/seasons and enjoy being an advocate and someone to be in solidarity with you.
  3. Hobbies?  Dancing, going to the movies – like a lot, blogging and creating free resources here: TheSAProNextDoor.com, and letter writing. I used to play drums and a little keyboard, but I’d be lying if I said I still do these things.
  4. Favorite Sports? This is where I never fit in. I don’t keep up with sports at all. I’m usually excited to watch Super Bowl commercials (on YouTube), play pickup basketball, and avoid injuring myself during a game of dodgeball. If you ever need someone on your intramural team, let me know. I’m in.
  5. What is something about your identity that I would not be able to tell by looking at you? Hmmmm…that I was born in Spain.
  6. What motivates you as a Student Affairs professional? You do. I had some great mentors when I was in undergrad, and I’m all about giving back. I went through a lot growing up, came from a low socio-economic background, and have had plenty of challenges as a Black man. My mentors have been loving people who’ve pushed me to aim higher and strive for more. I want to be that person for others.
  7. What was your dream job in college? Public Relations Specialist then High School English Teacher then graduation arrived too quickly.
  8. How do you like to procrastinate? I’ll get back to you on that. Sike nah. Netflix, Facebook, Hulu, Twitter Moments, figuring out what Twitter Moments even are, and being reluctant to get out of bed.
  9. What are your passions? Access to good education, Equality and Liberation for under-served populations, Public Speaking, Writing, and really good food. I used to be a facilitator in a program that showed connected high school students to individuals experiencing homelessness. I enjoy sharing my experiences with this program.
  10. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Ambitious answer: Director of Residence Life and National Speaker. Other answer: No idea today.
  11. Any fun college stories? Things that happened in undergrad at Saint Peter’s University: went to West Virginia and learned about mountain top removal and how to transport giant bales of hay; traveled to Honduras where I experienced an earthquake; freestyle rapped on stage with a band that came to our school; and did some stand-up comedy and acting.
  12. How do you feel about living on a college campus? Good days and annoying days. But mostly good days.
  13. Where did you first meet your wife? Rosemont College. Here’s our wedding video: https://vimeo.com/135914324
  14. Taylor Ham or Pork Roll? Bacon.
  15. What’s your favorite food? Baked mac and cheese. Also, I love breakfast at any time of the day.
  16. What are your interests? (Social, professional etc.) This year I want to: join a social bowling league, attend paint nights, go swing dancing (I learned this when I lived in Portland, Oregon), go contra dancing, present at a few conferences, and one day do a TED talk.
  17. What kind of supervisor do you consider yourself to be? Communicative, trusting, honest, collaborative, willing to be flexible if it makes sense to be, goofy, never too busy for a conversation, innovative, and constantly learning something new.
  18. If you could have a superpower what would it be? Speed like the Flash.
  19. What is your go to drink order? The lemon flavored Vitamin Water.
  20. How was your AmeriCorps experience? Life changing. It’s amazing how much you can learn to be patient and humble when working with children and living with housemates. I love talking about my Jesuit Volunteer and AmeriCorps experience. If you’re interested in any programs like this, let’s chat. I’d also be happy to connect you with other alum.
  21. What’s your favorite TV Show? Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
  22. What is your favorite season of the year? Why? Because I was born on Oct 20th. I also love fresh apple cider, hay rides, and leaves changing colors.
