Does This Make Me Weak: Black Men & Mental Illness

As Black men, we live in a society that says, “asking for help makes you weak”. Help-seeking skills aren’t often taught, rather we’re told to move in silence and to deal with any trauma in kind. So, when we’re diagnosed with a mental illness, we can feel lost, confused, angry, understandably in denial, and without a plan of action. This session will discuss the impact of storytelling as it relates to restoration and ending mental illness stigma, the benefits of opening up, and tangible resources Black men can access on their journey of healing.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define mental illness
  • Understand the role of storytelling as it relates to ending mental illness stigma
  • Describe the transformative impact of storytelling in healing and restoration
  • Name three inexpensive/free resources for mental illness support

Mental Health + First Responders

The RAs Guide to Managing Stress & Anxiety During COVID

In a time of loss, grief, and uncertainty, first responders are tasked with adjusting to this ever-changing climate. The fast-paced environment of university life can make it challenging to pause and notice how burnout is impacts the students at the ground level of crisis response: Resident Assistants. This session will discuss the impact of compassion fatigue and COVID on RAs, coping skills & techniques, utilization of stress first aid, and boundary setting.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define compassion fatigue
  • Recognize the 7 signs of burnout
  • List three grounding techniques for stress reduction
  • Understand the importance of consistency, clarity, and courage as they relate to anxiety management
